WALL COVERINGS

Our wall covering collection comprises over 900 examples of wall coverings: borders, friezes and ceiling papers, as well as body papers dating from the mid 19th Century to the present day. It includes rolls, samples and many fragments retrieved from Australian houses. In addition to the wall coverings held in the Caroline Simpson Library & Research Collection, this database includes wall coverings from Rouse Hill estate.

GARDEN ORNAMENT

Our garden ornament collection comprises a wide selection of objects: fountains, urns, sundials, furniture and edging tiles, dating from the mid 19th century to the present day. It includes everything from finely crafted stone through to inexpensive cast concrete objects representative of the type used in Australian gardens. In addition to the garden ornament held in the Caroline Simpson Library & Research Collection, this database includes items from Government House and Elizabeth Bay House.

HARDWARE

Our hardware collection currently includes a variety of door hardware: door knobs, handles and knockers as well as locks, fingerplates and escutcheons. Curtain, blind, window and other domestic hardware will be added to the database in the future. All of this hardware, also known historically as builders’ hardware or ironmongery, is held in the Caroline Simpson Library & Research Collection.

FLOOR COVERINGS

Our floor covering collection comprises examples of over 350 floor coverings: carpets, rugs, felt, matting, oilcloth, linoleum, felt base and vinyl. It includes mats and rugs, carpet runners and carpet squares and some rolled carpets as well as samples and some fragments, many retrieved from Australian houses. In addition to the floor coverings held in the Caroline Simpson Library & Research Collection, this database includes floor coverings from Rouse Hill estate.
